Som tam and Tom Yum Goong : Delicious Thai movies
Ratatouille make me think of some movies that
are named after Thai cuisine, the Thai movies like Tom Yum Goong,
Khaoniaw- Mooping (Sticky Rice and Roast Pork), and Chocolate have no food
involve at all. Another movie, som tam, has just small part involving
with food. It is a story of a guy that jack up his power by having som tam.
Anyways, the food titles that are used could help the viewer understand clearer
about the movie concept somehow.
The title Tom Yum Goong, a kind of well-known Thai dish, has given the image of the movie as the proper mix of the hot
and spicy Thai taste of action scenes that is unique and hard-to-forget.
Next, Khaoniaw-Mooping, the perfect pair of sticky rice and
roast pork, represents that relationship of a lonely orphan girl and a puppy
she pets. Both of them always be together until one day, they have to split.
This movie has pointed out the social problems like homeless kids and pooch. To
remind and highlight their relation, the words Khaoniaw-Mooping", is
perfect to be their name and also be movie's name.
For Chocolate, it seems that the only thing involving with
chocolate is that Sen, the main actress, loves chocolate. However, her life is
also the same as chocolate. There are lots of things flowing into her. Sen has
to face the bitterness of the problems that flow in, the sweetness of her love to mother, and her own
innocence as she has Autistic disorder. All together combined is her
"Chocolate".
The last one is som tam, and once again the same main
actress as Khaoniaw-Mooping (all of the 4 food-title movies mentioned are from
the same production house. Maybe These namings are their marketing plan). The
story is about Barney who accidently eats som tam, and then he turns red
and become super-powerful (like Hulk). Therefore, to fight against the mafia,
Barney strengthens himself with som tam. Including with the spicy of the
action scenes, this movie is named as som tam.
Yet, none of Thai movies (that I could think of) has
picked food as the main theme however, the food titles have been picked as the
title of the movies. Thus, before rent or buy any Thai movies, you
should better read the story summary; otherwise instead of a delicious movie,
you might get a non-stop fighting movie.
